New Year, Not A New Me

Have You Heard? New Year Resolutions Are Out. There’s Something New & Better!

We're officially a week into 2025 and if you set a New Year resolution - I bet you’ve already given up, forgotten or feel completely overwhelmed by it.

How do I know this?

We set huge goals with the intention of doing them immediately in the midst of winter (right after all the Christmas shenanigans when it’s raining and dark outside + all the cute decorations and fairy lights put away = lowest motivation possible).

It doesn’t really make sense.

But it’s still a brand new year, and you probably want some movement, routine and things to look forward to and maybe even some goals you’d love to achieve.

I completely relate.

That’s why I have chosen a word for the year for the last 3 years and it’s been life-changing

In 2023, I chose the word ‘Health’, this was the first time I tried this, rather than ‘run more’ or eat healthy’ as my New Year resolution.

But - it was basically a failure.

I kept forgetting my word and didn’t really change much or make any effort to improve my health.

In 2024, I chose the word ‘Sleep’. I was much more ready and inspired to drastically change my sleep. I had recently started measuring my sleep statistics on my smart watch and I was only getting 4 hours of sleep, which was obviously impacting my mood, health, energy levels, snappiness, focus, and to be honest, the list goes on and on.

So each month, I set myself a target to improve my sleep by changing one thing in my daily routine. Then, I would get a really good indication of what really helped, what was worth doing and how I felt day to day over 4 weeks. From red light glasses to supplements to a weighted blanket, some things had a profound effect and others were a complete gimmick - so if you’re interested, I’ll write another blog post more in-depth about what worked and didn’t work for me.

Sleep hygiene is my best friend

It was incredible to see my sleep reach 8/9 + hours most nights and even sometimes 10 hours. It felt like a complete transformation in every sense with barely any effort or mental load involved

I had the year to explore and month by month I could see the progress (without having to immediately change my entire personality and motivation in the first week of January).

I don’t know about you, but I feel like there’s a lot of pressure in life, so adding more tasks and things to do sends me into overwhelm. So that’s why I love having a word of the year where I can take small incremental steps to embody it.

Now that it’s 2025, I’ve got a brand-spanking new word.

My word of the year is… [drumroll please]

PLAY

I work hard, but I don’t play hard. With long working hours and being self-employed, I rarely take any downtime and exercise has become part of my job (I used to find more ‘play’ in it). I found myself noticing when I laugh (which made me realise it was becoming such a rare occurrence) and I feel like my personality has morphed into taking things seriously and being stressed (adult life - am I right?).

So how am I injecting ‘play’ into my life?

Last week, I went for a walk and I took a detour to a swing that hangs from a huge oak tree. I spent five minutes just swinging in the sunshine - I couldn’t stop smiling. So I’ll remember the feeling of swinging in the sunshine with my wellies when I need motivation to ‘play’ this week.

Follow along with my journey, I’ll be doing one or two things a week that make my inner child giggle and I’ll post them on socials @francescacorcoranyoga & @balancebrainbody.

What’s your word for 2025?
